DIY Wedding Decorations: Paper Lanterns

Paper lanterns are an easy and affordable way to add some flair to your wedding decorations. The paper you use can vary in size depending on how big or small you want your lantern to be. You will need two pieces to get started: one larger square, and a smaller rectangle. A couple of hints: If you choose paper with a pattern on both sides it will result in a more colorful lantern; OR if you choose paper that is lined on the back (Memory Makers is one brand that offer this) it will make cutting lines a snap! Here is how to make them:
  • First, take the smaller rectangular paper and put double-sided tape along one edge. Affixing with the tape, shape the paper into a cylinder.
  • On the square paper, mark off 1-2 inches at both ends of the paper that will serve as the top and bottom of the lantern. On top of a cutting mat, cut straight lines .5-1 inch apart with an exacto knife, starting after the top border and stopping before the bottom border.
Hint: Mark off the space between the lines with the measurements on your cutting mat. Keep lines straight with the help of a ruler.

  • Turn the patterned side of the paper face up and fold the borders in toward the center.
  • Turn over and place double sided tape along the top and bottom edge of both borders
  • Carefully affix the square paper to the top and bottom of the cylinder. Using a hole punch, make two holes in the top of the lantern and string a ribbon or wire or ribbon to serve as a handle.
  • Attach each lantern to a longer string at intervals and voila! You're done!
