According to The Knot the tradition of something borrowed comes from an old English rhyme: “Something Olde, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, and a Sixpence in your Shoe.” Specifically, carrying something borrowed represents borrowing the happiness of others as you start your married life together. Here is a “something borrowed” idea:
Advice: while more traditionally given to the bride at the shower, giving your guests an opportunity to share their words of wisdom with you at your reception will allow additional friends and family to participate and can serve as a replacement for the guest book. Just set out small cards that guests can fill out and then add them to a photo book.
We did this at my wedding, and I was delighted with the results. Not only did we get some touching advice and fun memories, our friends got very creative with some interesting drawings and (yes, even) crossword puzzles and acrostic poems written just for us!
