Tattoos and Wedding Gowns

Lately, we've had a few brides in our shop who have wanted (or their moms wanted) a wedding dress that would cover up their back tattoos but still be interesting and beautiful. So in an effort to help other brides in the same predicament, I thought I would post a few dresses from our shop that fit the bill. Below are my choices and I love every one of them!

"Callie"
"Kristen"
"Muse" (FYI our version doesn't have the flower appliques)
"Dana" lace jacket- she can go with a lot of gowns
"Jane Shrug" can also be worn with many dresses
"Prima Wrap" again can be paired with many dresses

Our Bride

As you can suspect we LOVE getting wedding day photos from our brides! It's so nice to see them with their hair and make-up done, holding hands with their husbands and looking amazing in the gown they chose from our shop! It doesn't get much better than that- at least for us:) So you can imagine our excitement when we received wedding day photos from Ashley in her beautiful, mermaid Caroline DeVillo "Madeline" gown and Lenora Dame jewelry. She looked beautiful and we couldn't believe her pictures were taken in Disney World at the Animal Kingdom! Congratulations Ashley!

Our Bride

The Couple: Shannon & Jeff
The Gown: Linda by Fancy
Photographer: Imagen Photography

How adorable is this wedding and the bride and groom?! When we first met Shannon we knew she was our type of bride because she wanted a unique and short wedding gown and she was having her reception at Nighttown in Cleveland Heights- we love it there! After some deliberation, Shannon went with the Fancy "Linda" dress and we just loved how she paired it with a bright blue fabulous shoe. As we knew she would, Shannon looked amazing on her wedding day and we couldn't be happier for her and her husband. Enjoy the photos and congratulations Shannon and Jeff!

Our Bride

The Couple: Ashley and Peter
The Gown: Madeline by Fancy
Veil: Jennifer Leigh
Photographer: RedKite Photography and RUTABEGA Photography

I think one of the best parts of owning a bridal shop is getting pictures of our brides after their big day! Which is why I'm so excited to share these amazing photos of our beautiful bride Ashely! First off, doesn't she look like an old Hollywood movie star in these?! I love how she paired her signature red lips with our Madeline dress and Jennifer Leigh veil and then her husband Peter wore a great plaid suit! Everything was so vintage appropriate, and so Ashley and Peter! Second, I love the photography style of both of these photographers, they captured amazingly, personal moments- I mean did you see the picture of Peter helping Ashley with her shoe?! Thank you to everyone and we wish Ashley and Peter many happy years together!

Generation to Generation

My mother-in-law passed this article onto me and I just love the ideas behind it. I feel like you could look at it two ways.

1) If you have one available you could wear a family heirloom dress. We've actually had a few brides in our shop recently doing the same thing- wearing a family wedding dress for their ceremony and then wearing their own wedding dress for the reception. How fabulous would it be to wear the same wedding dress that your mom, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother wore on their wedding days?! What history! And you would still get to express your personality with a reception dress.

2) You could be the first generation to make a family heirloom. If you choose a wedding gown you love, that is good quality fabric (silks, wools, no polyester) and construction and ensure you get it cleaned and preserved after your wedding your gown could be the first gown that generations to come will wear on their wedding day! Although you don't know if future generations will want to wear your dress, it would be nice to have everything prepared just in case.

So what do you think? Which one would you do?

Wrap Cardigan

With fall weddings quickly approaching what better way to fend off the chill on your wedding day than with a cardigan! We think cardigans look great with most gowns but we especially love them with ballgowns or fuller bottom skirts. I was recently perusing H&M and found this wrap cardigan in it's lovely subdued colors and thought it would be perfect for a bride at her reception. I love how it wraps and has a bit shorter length which will hit perfectly at the waist. And the best part you really can wear it again after your wedding with other dresses and skirts AND it's only $29.95!

More New Gowns!

So to continue the post from last week, below are more pics of the new dresses that will be arriving at our shop in the coming weeks! We love them all!!

The Vineyard Collection
Vineyard showcased beautiful new dresses in silhouettes we love! We also picked up "Drew" since many of our brides have been requesting her!

"Libby"- she has a beautiful texted fabric with subtle sequins throughout. Her sash and halter strap are removeable making her very versatile!

"Drew"- the ever popular short dress we will finally have in our shop for good!

"Addie"- a beautiful silhouette and you can of course change out the sash.

The Steven Birnbaum Collection
We went with two of their adorable short dresses that we have been coveting for awhile!

"Eloise"- she has an amazing eyelet fabric with flattering box pleats.

"Audrey"- she is just cute as a button and would make a great reception dress.

Blush Colored Wedding Dress

If you’re a wedding blog junkie like myself you’ve probably already come across Reese Witherspoon’s amazing blush colored wedding gown she wore for her wedding two weeks ago. Her gown reminded me how much I love a subtle blush colored wedding dress, the slight color just seems to provide more whimsy and romance to a wedding and who doesn’t want that on their day?! Perhaps this is why Karin and I fell in love with Lela Rose’s Cloud 9 wedding gown and ordered it in blush rather than ivory. Although some more traditional brides might shy away from a colored gown, if you are looking for something a little different blush could be the way to go. The slight hue can brigthen your complexion and also be a jumping off point for your wedding colors. Sounds like a great new trend to try!

Another Great Dress

If you've ever visited our shop then you know Karin and I aren't really into sparkly wedding gowns, we prefer interesting cuts/fabrics and beautiful laces to sequins and glitter. However, as I was perusing my favorite wedding blogs this morning I came across this dress on Style Me Pretty and it made me swoon. It has just enough sparkle with the sequin flowers to make it glamorous and I love the high back with covered buttons. It reminded me a lot of our "Callie" gown by The Steven Birnbaum Collection with its keyhole/notch collar and sleeveless silhouette. Of course when I looked at the credits the gown was made by Birnbaum and Bullock, the high end bridal line designed by Steven Birnbaum and Robert Bullock. Oh how those gentlemen make beautiful gowns.

Wedding Update Wednesday: The Dress

SPOILER ALERT: If you are Chad, or otherwise don't want to see what my wedding dress looks like, do not scroll down :)

And now for the post:

As you can imagine, shortly after I became engaged friends and family began to ask which of the gowns in our shop I was going to get for MY wedding dress. Surprisingly I really didn't know. Sure there were dresses that I knew would be under consideration but I think it is hard to choose your wedding gown until you are actually planning the big day. Then when I actually started trying on gowns it was so hard to choose just one - after all, I love a lot of our gowns!
The Ones that Got Away: I loved these gowns but sadly I could only choose one.
Clockwise from top left: "The Brownstone" by Lela Rose, "Dana" by Caroline DeVillo ID Collection, "Lindsey" by The Vineyard Collection, "Callie" by The Steven Birnbaum Collection, "Laurel" by Amy Kuschel Bride, "Cloud 9" by Lela Rose, "Emily"by Fancy, and "Bella" by Caroline DeVillo Couture.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when dress shopping that I learned during my gown search:
- Not everyone will have that "this is THE dress" moment. So if you find a dress you love but don't start crying about it, don't take that as a sign that it is not the dress.
- Wedding dresses by their very nature are pretty and sometimes it can be hard to separate loving a pretty dress from loving a dress for you
- Try not to have preconceived notions. A dress you love should not be discounted because it is not what you pictured yourself in - you never know how you will look in something until you try it on!
- When trying on a lot of dresses they can all start to blur together. We ask brides to rank their top three so that they can narrow down their favorites as they go along.
- If you are having trouble deciding between a few gowns here are some other factors to consider:
  • Which dress do you feel better suits your style and personality?
  • Which dress better fits your venue and wedding theme?
  • Which gown do you think your fiance would like better?
  • Which gown better fits your budget?
After taking all of the above under consideration, here is the gown I chose:
"The Woods" by Lela Rose
Let me know what you think! I'm excited!

Happy Monday!

How fabulous is this dress?! I'm not sure I would have the guts to wear it as a wedding dress but I would definitely wear it as a rehearsal dinner dress for a spring/summer wedding or even as a wedding shower dress . Oh how we love full, short dresses here at Something White!

Nice Day for a Black Wedding?

If you've been paying attention to bridal fashions these past few seasons you've probably noticed that color has been poppoing up. Blush colored wedding gowns, light gray wedding gowns and even pale yellow colored wedding gowns have graced the runway of Lela Rose and Vera Wang, but would you ever consider a black wedding gown a la Sarah Jessica Parker when she married Matthew Broderick? I'm not sure if I am bold enough to pull it off but this dress is awfully pretty!

New Designer- Amy Kuschel!

It's official!! After many weeks of fawning over her wedding gowns, we finally chose our eight favorite dresses and placed our sample order with our new designer Amy Kuschel! If you aren't familiar with Amy, she is a boutique wedding gown designer based in San Francisco who 10 years ago had the ingenious idea of making, “beautiful and affordable couture wedding dresses for the sophisticated, modern bride.” Like some of our other designers Amy constructs each gown in her studio and she uses real fabrics- as you all know Karin and I are sticklers for real fabric! We think she is a perfect fit for Something White and we can’t wait for our dresses to start arriving in January!

Dietrich- we love the high neck and low back!

Hope- she would be perfect for a destination wedding!

Kennedy- we LOVE this all over real lace dress!

Piedmont- She will be full length when she arrives at our shop and we
love everything about her especially her lace sash!
